Hi everyone, I am Anubis from Peking university, China. I am in my third year of university, majoring in Environmental and Resource Economics. The social issue I am focusing on is environmental issues such as pollution and protection. I love to travel and sports, especially outdoor sports. I like rock climbing, hiking, and mountaineering.
It’s the sixth day of our program. After a happy as well as exhausting tour on the free day, we got up early at 6:30 to volunteer at Glide Memorial Church. It’s one of the free dining hall we had experienced 2 days ago. We were served last time, this time, it’s our turn to serve people. That kind of comparable experience enables us to build a great understanding and empathy on the situation which homelessness is going through at the present.
Some of us were doing volunteering work in the kitchen, some were working as waiters. The first thing to do to be a waiter is to dress like a waiter, we took off our coats and wore aprons, gloves and hair nets. Before people came to the dining hall, we did a lot of preparation to make sure all the staff was placed in order, and practiced to make sure that we could get things to work when they came.
But when they really came, it still took a little time to perform as a good severer. We should always keep an eye on tables and make sure to answer customers’ need in time. They are all very nice to us which did inspire us a lot and made a pleasing feeling of helping people. Not only will you feel happy when they were saying thank you or good morning to you, but also when you just do something kind to help others. And one thing impressed me most was an old Chinese lady who told me about her experience and nine words that I should keep in mind along my life time.
After the busy work, we were greatly praised by the manager of the church, and by doing a little more help in back kitchen, everyone who worked there got a surprising treat, potato chips!
After the lunch, we did our individual work and meet again at 5:00pm to do reflection at the conference room. After that, the whole program members held a pizza party at the Good Hotel Lobby which was proposed by Taka. After that, we decided to walk around to give away left over to homeless people on the street. Some people were kind and grateful for what we did, some people who were not really in need of food took the pizza too, which was reflected afterwards. One thing that did happen was a woman on drugs being mad. But that’s kind of part of our experience as well.
